At Adventure Orthodontics, we have more than 40 years of experience in providing orthodontic treatment to teens and adolescents in the Spring, Texas area. We know that this is a special time in their lives that is full of changes and increased self-awareness. By providing them with orthodontic care before they reach adulthood, we are helping them avoid more difficult and more invasive procedures in the future, because orthodontic issues don’t improve with age – they just become harder to treat.

Frequently started between the ages of 12 and 16, since most permanent teeth will be in place, the teen years are the most common time for orthodontic treatment. This is usually the perfect time for treatment because children at this age are growing rapidly, and we can take advantage of these growth spurts to help shape the bite and teeth correctly.

The social element to receiving orthodontic treatment at this age can be a very positive one – if your teenager needs braces, they aren’t alone! Many of their friends and classmates will also be receiving orthodontic care. It will be a journey they can experience together, and once it’s done, they will all have smiles they can be proud of and benefits that will last their entire lives.

My teens play sports when undergoing orthodontic treatment, what should we do?

If your teen athlete is wearing more traditional braces, it will be essential to protect their smile in order to keep on track with treatment. We strongly recommend that they use an orthodontic mouthguard to protect their braces, and their mouth, from any potential injury. With the use of a proper orthodontic mouthguard, any contact sport can be played with braces.

Orthodontic treatment is truly an investment in your child’s future. By scheduling a complimentary consultation, Dr. Bar will be happy to discuss the benefits of treatment with both of you, as well as any of the potential risks associated with delaying or foregoing treatment. Although adults can, and do, successfully complete orthodontic treatment, the jaws and teeth of teenagers often respond more quickly to orthodontic treatment, shortening their total treatment time.
